FAQs

Troubleshooting

Why is my ink cartridge not printing?

Ink will settle at the opposite end of the print heads and may be unable to directly feed it at first.
The easiest way to fix this is to open the box and stand the cartridge upside down for a few moments before using. Next, fold a paper towel into fours and get it damp. Then set the cartridge print head down onto it for a few minutes. Doing so will prime the head and pull the ink out. Once complete, print a test page after you install the cartridge into your printer.

Why didn’t my cartridge print the full number of pages? Why was the yield lower than what I see online?

Page yield is based off 5% coverage of legal size paper. For example, a short memo has 5% coverage on legal size paper. If you are printing photos, web pages, or any other graphics, coverage can vary significantly, as will page yield.

Why am I getting an error message when I install my new cartridge?

Common error messages are as followed:

  • Replace your black/color cartridges
  • The cartridge light blinks on the computer
  • Check your black/color inkjet cartridge
  • The cartridge is not seated properly
  • There is no cartridge installed

Solutions and troubleshooting techniques:

Cartridges that do not have internal print heads (Epson, Canon, Brother)

The chip on the cartridge is not making contact with the printer sensors.

  • Open the area of the printer where the cartridges are installed and remove the problematic cartridge.
  • Reinstall to ensure it is securely seated so the chip is lined up with the printer sensors.
  • Close the printer cover, turn printer off, unplug and wait a few moments.
  • Plug printer in and wait a few seconds to restart.
  • Once complete, print a test page!

Cartridges with internal print head (HP, Lexmark, some Canon)

This is caused from unclean contact points or the cartridge is not making proper contact to the printer.

  • Open the area of the printer where the cartridges are installed and remove the problematic cartridge.
  • Completely power down for a few minutes and unplug from power source. The cartridge contacts can be cleaned by using a lint-free cloth, or we prefer coffee filters!
  • Once complete, plug your print in and power the machine up then reinstall your cartridge.
Important note: the cartridge must be securely seated in the proper place/designated slot.
  • After doing so, the printer should recognize the cartridge and you should be good to go. Print a test page to make sure.

Why does it say my cartridge is empty? I just installed it!

This message is usually the result of a cartridge that is not firmly seated in the designated slot.

The remedy is simple: Completely remove the cartridge from port. Reinstall cartridge by snapping into place and making sure it securely fastened. Note, your printer does not actually read the amount of ink in the cartridge, instead it simply estimates the amount of ink remaining by remembering the number of pages that were printed when the last cartridge was installed.

Another remedy is to reinstall the cartridge and click on the install new cartridge option. Refer to your printer’s manual for further steps.

By doing the second method, your printer will be prompted that a new cartridge has been installed which will then reset the page counter.

If either of these solutions do not eliminate the error message, please call us at 888-270-3080 or give us a shout@lowpricedtoner.com via email. We typically reply within minutes!

Why does the cartridge I receive look bigger than the one I have in my printer?

This is totally normal and done so to avoid infringement on any patent designs. You’ll notice that many compatible and remanufactured cartridges look slightly different than printer-brand cartridges.

First, make sure if there is a protective clip on the cartridge that it is removed prior to installation (this is an L shaped clip that protects from any damages that may occur during shipping).

Next, make sure you remove any protective tape that covers the cartridge’s print head too.

Finally, make sure you are putting the correct cartridge in the correct printer 🙂

What is the best way to store our cartridges?

Cartridges should be stored in an upright position in room temperature. For optimal performance, before using the cartridge, place it in the upright position for a few hours to allow the ink to move to the bottom of the cartridge. Doing so allows the ink to pass through a sponge, ensuring the cartridge prints properly!

What is the difference between high-yield and standard-yield?

High-yield cartridges hold more ink than standard cartridges, allowing you to print at a more cost effective price. For example, a high-yield cartridge may allow you to print 2x the standard yield version, but you’ll pay less than 2x the price.

What is a remanufactured cartridge?

Original printer-brand cartridges that have been through a cycle of service before undergoing professional remanufacturing processes are considered remanufactured cartridges, or “re-mans” for short. The cartridges undergo a rigorous quality assurance process to ensure the following:

  1. thoroughly cleaned print heads
  2. highest quality ink formulations fill the cartridges
(at the correct internal atmospheric pressure)
  3. products are inspected for any possible leakages
  4. an electrical circuitry test is ran to ensure efficient operations
  5. and finally, a test page is printed

What is the shelf life of a compatible brand cartridge?

Compatible, third party print cartridges typically have a three-year shelf life.
